How to Manage Jaw Pain Until We Can See YouJaw pain can prevent you from opening and closing your mouth normally and will cause you pain. If you suffered trauma to the face or head followed by discomfort in the jaw, you should seek medical attention immediately.

If the pain is the result of bruxism and you can move your mouth normally, but have other painful symptoms, call us and we will bring you in as soon as possible.

What Can I Do for Jaw Pain?

If you cannot get seen at our office for several hours, there are some things you can do in the meantime to manage jaw pain until we can see you.

•  Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication or analgesics,
•  Use a warm compress and hold to the side that hurts being careful not to burn yourself,
•  Use an ice pack that is wrapped in a soft cloth to reduce inflammation,
•  Avoid hard foods and eat a soft diet,
•  Try to relax your jaw as much as possible, and keep teeth from touching,
•  Hold your jaw gently when yawning to prevent it from locking,
•  Do not chew gum or hard foods.

Jaw pain can be moderate to severe and its causes range from too much chewing to a blow to the face or head. When you experience jaw pain, there are some home remedies that can help you feel better until we can see you. The most important thing is not to manipulate the jaw or try to put it back in place if it seems dislocated.

Only a trained professional should do this. Most of the time, jaw discomfort goes away on its own, with time and some minor adjustment in habits. When the jaw pain is caused by trauma, it's important to get seen at our office right away and if you must wait until the next day, you should call 911 or go the emergency room.
